Clearly reflective of the ratio of smokers to the population and the death rate as a consequence of cancer in American in the year of 1991 and 2014 are the charts. The ratio of smokers in 2014 halved compared to 1991, dropping from 40% to 20%,while the death rate during the period also falls from 2155 per million to 1718 per million.
Significantly contributing to the phenomenon are the following reasons. In the first place, people have become increasingly aware of the danger of smoking. As the American government educated people about the harm of smoking, people were discouraged from consuming cigarettes and hence the proportion of smokers dropped. In addition, the advancement of medical treatment saved millions of lives. With the development of medical technologies, people’s life span was prolonged enormously and some types of cancer can be cured without huge expenses.
Thus, it is predictable that more and more people will quit smoking and more lives can be saved from cancer. It is recommendable that people develop a healthy habit of life so as to live a longer and happier life.
